Yesterday was the 3rd day of my biphasic sleep experiment. All in all it was a great day. I got a lot of reading done, and I still spent time with friends. I have been testing my logical mind a lot these last few days, just to keep on top of things and test for change, and I have to say I feel as though my mind works through problems and comes up with solutions a bit faster. I cannot prove this, but I feel less sluggish getting the old brain to work.
I even came up with an idea for my next Brain Vault experiment. I’ll share the details as soon as I draft them.
I did feel a bit sluggish around 2 pm yesterday. I usually take a 20 minute nap around that time, and the first 2 days I skipped it, but I decided that since it was a regular habit of mine it probably wouldn’t compromise the integrity of the experiment, so I went ahead and took it.
Emotional State: hopeful
Mental State: conscious
Physical State: all systems go
Feelings about Biphasic: high hopes
Productivity: through the roof
Diet: different than usual, but steady
Fitness: still not sure yet (took the first 3 days off to adjust, will be hitting the gym this evening)
Upon assessing the amount of physical activity I am used to and the sleep that I get after said activity, I’m a bit weary of what my first day after a hardcore workout is going to be like. I plan on hitting the weights tonight, then playing basketball afterwords for a few hours. That ought to deplete a pretty good portion of my energy.
I feel I should mention that I have had a cup of coffee each the last 3 mornings. I’m not usually a big caffeine drinker, but for some reason I picked a cup up the first day, and since implementing a new lifestyle habit I just continued to do so. Tomorrow I’m going to skip the caffeine though. I’m sure it’s making the short term adjustment a bit easier, but the long term effects are probably not as great.
It seems crazy right now that out of the past 74 hours I only slept 13.5. It’s cool to know that I’m experiencing more life, but I also miss the act of a good night’s rest. Not necessarily the actual rest, since I don’t currently feel too deprived of sleep, but the act of being in bed. I love the comfort of my bed, as I’m sure most of you do, and I kind of miss that. I find myself wanting to read in bed more often than at my desk the last few days. I guess I’ll need to invest in a better bedside lamp.
Day 3 was a great success. Onto day 4!
